I make my dinner almost every evening and I dread going out because of the difficulty in finding a cafe offering simple, economic and healthy foods.I live on a limited income and I must be very careful to control my urges for fancy foods.
Anyhow, I splurge on some mozzeralla which I bought for a decent price at the local Cash&Carry wholesale store. In addition I picked up at a decent price some fresh halibut and a red bell pepper which I'm told is loaded with all sorts of necessary vitamins more than its green and yellow companions. I baked the halibut which I dressed with olive oil and several slices of bell pepper . I sliced the mozzerella, dipped the slices in egg batter and bread crumbs and sauted them in olive oil. For some greens I cut up some brocoli, steamed them and them sauted them in olive oil. It was terrific.Plenty of vitamins and extremely satisfying.

Book signing at Made in Oregon store`

Paul Pintarich, author and journalist, will be signing his new book HISTORY by the Glass, a Second Round,Saturday (Rose Festival Parade Day)June 7 from 2 to 4 p.m.at Made in Oregon store, Lloyd Center next door to Nordstroms.

Since its publication in November 2007, HISTORY by the GLASS, a Second Round, has enjoyed book signings at Powell's, Goose Hollow Inn, University Club of Portland, Buffalo Gap tavern, and Gottleib Art Gallery,(downtown Portland).

The book is a history of current historic Portland taverns, bars and saloons.Photos of the saloons accompany each essay plus a directional map. As for books they will remain the same , at least for the most part. There will be parts of books delivered through the internet and by DVD but neither will replace the actual book-toting item we are familiar with today.

Newspapers have a tradition of a large staff of specialists. Jackman also enjoyed the freshness of a seriocomic essay by Daniel Yost, the popular Portland screen writer who co-authored with Gus Van Sant "Drugstore Cowboy."
Jackman said it was unfortunate that only one of the articles ( in the book) was written by a woman and assumed that the magazine leaned heavily on the white male side. However, the book is based on the stories in Northwest Magazine covering more than 18 years. During that period 936 magazines were published and there were on an average about three feature articles in each magazine making it a total of more than 2800 articles for the period. The 28 included in the book represent less than one per cent of the total. Northwest Magazine was one of the first to highlight the cause of women's right. In fact, a theme issue was published in the '70s headlining the importance of the black woman and how she is regarded highly as a mother and homemaker. The issue received some negative feedback which came mostly from an all white distaff audience. The Tribune review ran Feb 6, 2005.

"High-quality " nostalgia

The Oregon Newspaper Publisher's bimonthly publication OREGON PUBLISHER called OREGON FEVER " high quality Northwest nostalgia.
